We know Gar Francis as the award winning lyricist and guitarist that helped propel the legendary 60's garage rock band, the Doughboys, to their current national fame.

But today I would like to share Gar’s solo work as an Americana songwriter. His new solo album titled "The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same" is well said. It was first released in Europe, where it received great reviews in print music magazines. FOLK WORLD (Germany) wrote: “Immediately with the first song "Midnight in Rome", it succeeds to animate and draw the listener to his voice”. That track was also placed in Red Bull's Rampage 2010, a complete sport DVD/Blue-Ray that captured the world's best pushing the limits of what is possible on a bike in Utah. Also the song “Bank Of The River” was placed in the new movie FAIRHAVEN, which will be debute at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012.

More recently on 10/15/2011 A World In Revolution, We Are 99% and Occupy Wall Street have brought attention to a song called Raise A Hand.

The Tri-State Equine Riding Team returns with live music from New Jersey musician
Plainfield Slim & The Groundhawgs.

After their great success last year at the Warren County Farmer Fair, the riding team volunteers in coming back to the fair with live music and new horse demo routines. With talents from different gaited horses from Latin America including Peru and the northern part of the globe Iceland and North America; a new show has been designed for you. The team’s captain Monique Grimme said: “This is our 8thyear and each year we do more and more, we have added the mystic of the gaited horse and we are bringing two clowns Bonky G. Bird and Quty the Clown”. With live music from International Blues recording artist Plainfield Slim, riders will show their riding routines on Friday night August 5th 7:00 PM in the Horse Ring at the Warren County Farmers Fair in Harmony, NJ.

This year’s riding members are: riding Captain Monique Grimme with her Mountain Pleasure Horse Boomer. Equine professional dressage trainer Suzanne Marshall & Nancy Himmelblau from Patewood Farm in Blairstown will present their Iberian horses; Andalusian and/ or Lusitanos with dressage. Torey Mather from Sleepy Hollow Farm, New Egypt, NJ will present her Peruvian horse in authentic riding costume and tack from Peru. Brian R. Campbell from Smoke Hollow Farm in Pittstown, NJ will present Western style riding with his the American Saddlebred. Michelle Sisolack from Gracefield Farm, Stewartsville, NJ, who scored #20 in the World with Barrel racing in 2010, will show her American Quarter and her excellent horsemanship training skills. Rodeo Barbie aka Denise A Dabinett from Pokey’s Place will present “911” the Rescue horse Curly, the little horse that was rescued in 2010 from slaughter.

To make the team complete of International riders and horses, Icelandic horses are presented by Regina Berrish & Anna Owen from Tolt Farm in Whitehouse Station, NJ.

The live music is lead by award winning songwriter and guitarist Gar Francis his band members include Lee Fink (from Nasty Ned and the Famous Chili Dogs) on slide guitar, from the legendary 60’s rock band the Doughboys Myke Scavone on harp and Mike Caruso on bass. You will find Myke’s little brother Rocco Scavone on drums. Together with the Tri-State Riding team they will put on a great lively show in the horse ring. The stage is provided by Mike’s Auto Body Shop and Towing in Washington, NJ and our MC that night is going to be radio DJ Roger Gary from “The T.G.I.F. Show” on 89.7FM and 91.9FM WDVR. The songs that the team has chosen will compliment their horses’ abilities and demonstrates, in an entertaining way the different styles of horseback riding to the audience. The show will start with our National Anthem by rock star singer Myke Scavone that you all know from the band Ram Jam (Black Betty) and the legendary 60’s Garage band The Doughboys. Sounds like Gar went back to his Ritchie Blackmore/Deep Purple roots for this one.

FPC's New York Celebrates George Harrison Concert - A Night Of Love And Bliss

The Doughboys - the hottest band in the New York / New Jersey Metro Area - are Rock and Roll legends. Formed in 1964, the group took the Doughboys name in 1966. Myke Scavone ( Lead Singer ), Gar Francis ( Guitar ), Richard X. ( "Richie" ) Heyman ( Drums ) and Mike Caruso ( Bass ) reunited in 2000 - after 35 years - and have been blowing audiences away - inside out - ever since.

The Doughboys are favourites of Little Steven, who features them on his Sirius/XM Satellite Radio Underground Garage Channel.

The Doughboys went straight for George's acerbic / insightful / witty side, starting with a powerful version of "Taxman" ( "Revolver" ), followed by a rollicking "Don't Bother Me" ( First song written by George to appear on a Beatles Album - "With The Beatles - UK / "Meet The Beatles" - US ), an electrifying "I Me Mine" ( "Let It Be" ) and a very determined "Think For Yourself" ( "Rubber Soul" ).

The Doughboys concluded their incredible set with "It's All Too Much" - a song from the "Yellow Submarine" Soundtrack. The group sent waves from the stage that took off to the ends of the Universe.
( "Yellow Submarine" - from "Revolver" - was adapted to become The Beatles only Feature length Animated Cartoon. )

The Doughboys performance left the audience absolutely reeling.

After the only Intermission of the Concert, it was time for Roberta Flack.

Roberta Flack is an icon of music - one of only two artists ( the other being U2 ) to win back to back GRAMMY Awards.

Gar Francis Acoustic coming to the Record Collector May 27th at 7:30pm

Gar Francis, an award winning singer and songwriter has with his versatile songwriting style produced work in several genres, including blues, Americana, and garage rock. Delivering a blend of music that only solidifies the versatility of this musician from New Jersey.
Born and raised in the Garden State, one of Francis' earliest recollections of his love of music is attributed to listening to his uncle and cousins playing songs by the Everly Brothers on their guitars.
It was during the 70s that Francis made the serious decision to start writing music. One of his first songs, "Baby It's You" for the band Ricochet, became a local hit and the band was asked to perform on a live MTV broadcast.

He was later recruited into the garage rock band, The Doughboys, and wrote the hit "Black Sheep." Francis went on to write and record songs for the band's second CD "Act your Rage."
He also wrote and produced two garage blues albums, "Another Mule in the Barn" for his band Plainfield Slim, and "When the Devil Hits Home" for Plainfield Slim & the Groundhawgs.
Francis has been compared to Bob Dylan and Tom Petty, and he continues to produce and write music. Most recently, Francis wrote and produced "Lady Gaga" for the band The Swinging Iggies.
Francis' music career has spanned decades with a multitude of songs that have entertained audiences for years. For fans who enjoy music from the early 60s, the modern version of roots blues, or good ol' fashioned Americana, then Francis' talents as a performer and songwriter would be sure to please.

Singer-songwriter Gar Francis to perform at NJAI

Veteran singer-songwriter Gar Francis is doing exactly what he wants: He's leading his own electric and acoustic bands, plus a blues band — Plainfield Slim and the Groundhawgs, releasing albums on his own Bongo Boy records and performing Americana music as a solo act. In addition, both Francis' award winning lyrics and sideman guitar duties have helped propel the legendary 60's garage rock band, the Doughboys, to their current national fame.
This Saturday, 8 p.m., at the New Jersey Arts Incubator, Essex Green, West Orange, Francis is bringing in a band that covers all his bases.
"It'll be an acoustic band, me on rhythm guitar and vocals, another guitarist to sweeten it, bass, and percussion," Francis said. "I don't want to pigeonhole it — we'll cover a spectrum of American music — some rock, some blues, a little country, some folk."
You can't pigeonhole Francis, either. After 40 years in music, the lanky, Plainfield-born and reared Francis is enjoying it all. "I don't even think about it, the music and lyrics just seem to be pouring out," Francis said.
Born Gary Thomas Venittelli, the first music that grabbed Francis was Sinatra's. "I came from a big, New Jersey Italian-American family and as a kid in the late '50s, early '60s, my dad would play William B. William's "Sundays with Sinatra" on the car radio while we drove to the relatives. My stage name is a tribute to Francis Albert Sinatra and to my Dad," Gar said.
Why Sinatra? "He was the master of telling a story with the lyrics," Francis said. "For me, music is like a beautiful woman — the melody of song, a woman's looks are what initially attract you, but it's the words she says or the lyrics of a song which grab you by the heart."
Francis' first gig was playing with his rock band at his Catholic school during high school. During the 1970s, he and the Rockids were a fixture at Max's Kansas City and CBGB's. By the '80s, he was writing songs and also playing the Keith Richards' parts in the Rolling Stones Tribute Band, Sticky Fingers.
Tired of touring, for a time Francis's songwriting supplanted the performing. He resumed performing, but continued to write hits for an array of performers, including blues diva Jeanne Dozier, for whom he wrote and produced the acclaimed album, "Queen of Dreams."
Now, Francis is concentrating on own performances and his work with the Doughboys. His first solo folk album, "Love and Protest," recently was released
"I think everything is working, because I'm at a point at where I really understand the roots of my music," Francis said. "I tell all the 'newbies' coming up, go back and listen to the blues, to the folk legends, to early rock, some jazz."
Francis has netted awards from the Unisong Music Writing Awards and by the John Lennon and Billboard song writing contests.
"I'm also at a point when I know exactly who I am — a Jersey Boy. I love it here; we have it all," Francis said. "New York City, the mountains, the shore."

Nazareth Center of the Arts a non-profit organization located at 30 Belvidere street in beautiful historic Nazareth, PA, will host live music by songwriter Gar Francis also known as blues musician Plainfield Slim. Gar Francis has been performing and entertaining audiences for years. He plays with the 60s legendary band the Doughboys, and has performed with his Juke Joint Blues band Plainfield Slim & The Groundhawgs at the Warren County Farmers Fair in August. His Americana music repertoire includes songs like ROCKET which is a tribute to our troops serving our country past and present and they also include other well written songs with great lyrics and beautiful guitar solos.

As a singer/songwriter, Gar has received awards for songwriting from The John Lennon Song Contest, the Unisong Music Awards, and an Honorable Mention in the Billboard Song Contest. Most recently he has received “The People Choice Award” as the writer of the “Coolest Songs In The World” on Little Steve Van Zandt Underground Garage Radio Show on Sirius Radio for 2008 & 2009. “The Different Styles of Riding” is coming to the Warren County Farmers Fair 8/6/10 7:00pm.

The horses will dance to a blues beat this year. Plainfield Slim & The Groundhawgs, is a raw, hypnotic, Mississippi type juke joint blues band. Band members: Gar Francis Vocal/Guitar Lee Fink (from Nasty Ned and the Famous Chili Dogs) on slide guitar, fellow Doughboys Myke Scavone on harp, and Mike Caruso on bass, and Myke’s little brother Rocco Scavone on drums.

Plainfield Slim & The Groundhawgs second album “When The Devil Hits Home” is receiving global radio success like their first album “Another Mule In The Barn.” Both albums released on Bongo Boy Records. They are available at Pokey's Place during the Fair. The band opened up for Peter Tork at Centenary Mini Blues Festival with a standing ovation in March.

A four piece, original rock band from Brooklyn. Roman Midnight Music, an indie Manhattan music label that recently reviewed their debut album said “Eye Of The Dawn immediately hits your ear with their topically creative, visually interesting lyrics, laid against a bed of shifting rhythms & melodies that constantly bring musical surprises.“ Since their live performance debut this past January, they have packed the house at The Bowery Electric in Manhattan and The Trash Bar in Williamsburg.

And have also opened for EMI super stars The London Souls. Their version of Devo’s Whip It! has been included on Main Man Records latest release ‘We Are Not Men, We Are a Devo Tribute’ which features members of Monster Magnet and The New York Dolls. At this time the band has found MoPromo Mgmt Co.

Gar Francis backs up his bark with a promising bite with a new production of a single by The EASY OUTS “Come On, Come On” on Bongo Boy Records release date: June 22, 2010.

“Come On, Come On” is a collaboration between songwriter/guitarist of the legendary 60’s Garage rock band The Doughboys, engineer and owner of House of Vibes Kurt Reil (Kurt is also drummer/singer and songwriter for the Grip Weeds) and the Jersey Shore rock band The Easy Outs.

With Gar and Kurt behind the board and the powerful Easy Outs behind the glass they have come up with a rock & roll gem full of fun and punch.

Born with a classic Rock & Roll voice Bruce Ferguson soars above a masterful bass line by Gage Rowley, and drummer Bernie Branz keeps the snares a blasting straight through. Accompanied by the high warm vocal harmonies of the Grip Weeds this is what makes a garage song a classic.

"I Dig It" - The New Single Of The Easy Outs

The other day I got an e-mail asking me to review the new single by the band the Easy Outs.

At first I thought their PR person had made a mistake as people usually want me to review an album or EP. She reassured me that they indeed only wanted the single reviewed. Thus I can't really speak much about these guys as this is the one and only song of theirs I've heard...so far.

I dig it.

This is pure simple rock and roll. I love this stuff. This New Jersey band has something going on and that something is FUN. Basically, I dig his voice – a lot and the guitar player can wail. Add in a drummer who is spot on and a solid bass and you have a rock and roll classic.

Bottom line: 4 scowls out of 5 on the Grouch scale. Would I go see these guys live? Yes I would!

In the 60’s Greenwich Village spawned the folk-rock craze that swept the country, and Folk City was at the center of it all. Everybody who was anybody played Folk City in the 60’s. Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, Peter Paul and Mary, John Lee Hooker, Richie Havens, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Roger McGuinn, and even the Monkees were regular performers.

International recording artist Plainfield Slim aka Gar Francis will be performing live at HomeGrownRadionj radio studio in Blairstown, NJ on June 13 at 3:00pm and the public is invited.

Plainfield Slim will perform with his Groundhawgs at HomeGrownRadio studio in Blairstown, NJ. This live broadcast concert is open to the public. In March this year Plainfield Slim opened up for Peter Tork at the annual Centenary Mini Blues festival. Plainfield Slim received a standing ovation for his performance in the Whitney Chapel at Centenary College.
This blues band has a familiar blues sound as music critiques say "you can find Plainfield Slim somewhere between Hound Dog Taylor and Elmore James" . On May 22 2010 Gar Francis performed at Albert Music Hall in Waretown, NJ. The song "The Bank Of The River" was a favorite by the staff of Albert Music Hall from day one when his manager emailed them Gar Francis' EPK.

Many thanks to Gar and band for playing at Albert Music Hall last Saturday. His "River" song is the best!... and his 12-string guitar player is absolutely great! Gar Francis – He’s been called the hardest working songwriter in America.

In 2009 Gar Francis wrote and produced the single “Rocket” as a tribute for the troops serving in the Armed Forces and performed it live for the troops at Fort Dix, New Jersey in the summer of that same year.

In the fall of 2009 Gar wrote and produced the single “Let’s Have A Rockin’ Christmas” for Jackie Kringle & the Elves. The single received great reviews as a classic rock song for the Christmas season.

So far 2010 has brought the release of the second Doughboys album and the first Gar Francis folk album “Love & Protest” which includes 14 original songs of daily life experiences of ordinary people, as well as acoustic versions of “Rocket” & “Raise A Hand”. "ACT YOUR RAGE" has also been voted as the "Coolest Song In The World" for 2009.

Gar Francis has played the Keith Richards role in Rolling Stones tribute band Sticky Fingers (The World's Greatest Rock & Roll Tribute Band). After being in that band he formed the Gar Francis Band and was a regular at Johnny Dirt's Dirt Club and The Bitter End in NYC and released a few singles under the Gar Francis name. During the 1990's Gar reunited with his old Rockids pal Wayne Oliver and formed the band Oliver Wilde that was managed for a while by Frank Sinatra's management company. During this time Gar also began writing with another Rockids alumni Mark Baxter who now is a renown vocal coach in the Boston area. They wrote and produced the song "Human Revival" which placed in the John Lennon song writing contest and won 4th place in the Unisong music awards. "Lisa" (don't you go down) another song by Francis and Baxter won an honorable mention in the Billboard song contest. In the new millennium Gar wrote and produced the critically acclaimed blues album "Queen Of Your Dreams" for Blues Diva Jeanne Lozier.

In the Vintage Guitar Magazine you will find an excellent review about Gar Francis and his blues band Plainfield Slim's first album "Another Mule In The Barn". The review will be published in the magazine section "The Hit List" on page 124 in their April's issue.

In the spring of this year Gar Francis will release his solo album. This album will include all original adult alternative pop tracks. Songs titled like "The Sun Will Never Go Down" and "Palaces" are currently receiving airtime in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and California and the UK.

Doughboys waste little time making second album

Some reunions take a little time to gather momentum.

When The Doughboys got back together in 2000 after more than 30 years apart, the result was a period of sporadic gigs for the New Jersey rock 'n' roll band. The chances of the group expanding its recording catalog beyond the two singles that were released in the late '60s didn't seem likely at first.

Then in 2007, The Doughboys released their first album, Is It Now? "Black Sheep," one of the album's originals, found a home on Little Steven's Underground Garage, and the band gigged throughout 2008 and 2009.

Relatively speaking, The Doughboys have quickly cooked up a sequel, Act Your Rage, which was released on RAM Records. Singer Myke Scavone, drummer Richie Heyman, guitarist Gar Francis and bassist Mike Caruso recently discussed the making of the new album, the "garage rock" tag and more.

Medleyville.us: Is It Now? was significant for The Doughboys for multiple reasons, among them it being a chance for old friends to record together again and to settle some unfinished business in the band's recording career. What was the goal and mindset when making Act Your Rage?
Myke Scavone: "What really pushed me more than anything is when we went into WBJB-FM's studios [in Middletown, N.J.] with Is It Now?, Rich Robinson, the DJ there, was interviewing us, and he asked, 'So, is this one and done, or do you think you guys will do anything else after that?' And I thought, 'Crap, I don't want to be a one-and-done.' So for me, that was kind of a motivator to do more.

"Plus, you know, we all had songs. Richie had songs, Gar had songs, me and Gar had written some things together, and we thought, 'Let's do it.' "

Richie Heyman: "It's an unfolding story, I would say. It just kind of keeps unfolding. It's a work in progress. We certainly don't plan these things out. They just kind of happen."

Gar Francis: "Well, being the new guy joining a band that was my high school idols, I initially was asked to join the band to fill in for a few dates for the original guitar player, Willy Kirchofer. My main aspiration has always been songwriting, and after some time, it looked as if I may be staying in the band for awhile.

"I had always known the band as a cover band and thought this band has too much energy and something very special that sets them apart from a lot of other bands, even by today's standards. Myke, Richie and Mike still have the same charisma and intensity as they did back in 1965.

"I set out to write songs specifically for this band's era and vibe. The first song I wrote for the band was 'Black Sheep,' which [was on] Is It Now? With Act Your Rage, it was just a continuation of the first album, with Myke and Richie getting more involved with the writing of songs, specifically for the band's sound and really trying to top ourselves after the first CD. … We wanted to see how far we could push each other into making another great or better album."

Mike Caruso: "Our goal for Act Your Rage was to make it greater and more diversified than Is it Now? We had time to play some of the songs at the gigs. We were able to sharpen and tighten up any loose ends. I love the end result."

Talk about the approach to writing and recording Act Your Rage as compared to the previous album.
Scavone: "When we first started doing this, originally we were just gonna record all these songs that we had written, and we had a couple of covers that we wanted to include – one of them, [The Kinks'] 'It's Alright,' was the last thing that we ever recorded with Willy. So we definitely wanted that to be included. And then [The Moody Blues'] 'Tuesday Afternoon' was just something that we had almost done by accident, but we kind of liked it and thought it was very weird for us to be doing it in the first place, so that's why we included that cover.

"But our original plan in recording all of these songs was we were gonna just pick 10 or 12 or them, but when it came down to what songs to eliminate, we couldn't really find any we wanted to do away with (laughs). So that's why it ended up with 16 songs. We just didn't want to take anything out of there – plus, we didn't know if we'd be alive to make another album after this (laughs)."

Heyman: "Going back to the first album, the whole concept was to just record these covers because a small percentage of those songs, we used to do back in the day. We were known as a cover band, and then it made sense to start evolving into an original project, but most of that came out on the second album.

"Some of the songs that I brought it were ones that I had always wanted Myke Scavone to sing lead on, and now I have that chance, so I brought a few of those in."

Scavone: "[Gar's material] and the stuff I wrote with Gar was stuff that we put together that we thought would be for The Doughboys. We just wanted to keep that old-school rock 'n' roll thing going. But I think we move out into a few more areas on this CD."

Francis: "The only different approach I took on the second album was to do a lot of different things with the guitar sounds. The first album was pretty straightforward, but with the second album, I wanted to use some of the effects from that era, such as 12-string guitar, wah-wah, a guitar through a Leslie, backward guitar solos, etc. The writing approach for me was the same – [to] capture the feel of the era [but] with some modern overtones."

Your version of The Moody Blues' "Tuesday Afternoon," which concludes the new album, has more balls than the original. There's a touch of Yardbirds throughout, most notably Richie's four-stroke hi-hat break near the middle that's a wink to "Shapes of Things."
Heyman: "That was a little homage. It's a little in-joke for those who know The Yardbirds. Our approach [to the song] was to toughen it up to do it the way we normally do things. But the [reason for] doing the song was for my wife's birthday; she's a big Moody Blues fan. It was just going to be a one-off thing that we did at the gig for me, and we got a lot of positive feedback from it doing it [our way]."

Scavone: "I was probably the one who pushed us the most to do that song. And it was mainly because I just liked the idea of doing something that's totally out of character for the band. I don't think there's anything that could be further away from what The Doughboys sound like than 'Tuesday Afternoon,' and then to try and pull that into who we are.

"Even now, when I listen to it, I have to laugh because if you listen to the lyrics, they are so out of touch with the way we play this song (laughs). They're kind of flowery. Our whole theme through most of this process was, 'It's got to be ugly. We have to make this ugly.' "

Heyman: "We're working on this Captain and Tennille medley (laughs) that we hope will make the next album."

Scavone: "We're trying to decide if we're gonna do that or the Wayne Newton one (laughs)."

The reunion of The Doughboys has benefited from a renewed interest in garage rock, which has been helped a great deal by Steven Van Zandt's radio programs both terrestrial and satellite. As 2010 begins, do you think garage rock has become too mainstream?
Scavone: "I wish (laughs)."

Heyman: "The term garage rock is a little strange for us because I think most people from the baby boomer generation who were in bands – that term wasn't really in use; it came later."

Scavone: "Yeah, more in the 1980s."

Heyman: "We didn't even know we were garage rock until people told us that we were doing – we were a rock 'n' roll band. But [that term] kind of points toward a harder-edge type band, [one] that leans toward more the British Invasion bands that did R&B-style rock -- The Animals and The Yardbirds."

Scavone: "I tend to characterize us more as an old-school rock 'n' roll band. [Garage rock] is more what people have labeled than what we would label ourselves, I would say."

Francis: "We were very lucky to be picked up by Little Steven. If it wasn't for the Underground Garage, there wouldn't be an outlet for our type of music. We didn't try to become a garage band; the band just plays the way they have always played. We have a slogan in the Doughboys, 'We just do what we do.' As far as mainstream, if you are saying we are being played on the same stations as Taylor Swift, Madonna, U2, Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay, I don't think so, although some of those acts are now being played where we are. It is pretty cool to hear a Doughboys song in between a Rolling Stones song and a Yardbirds song."

Caruso: "I don't think garage rock is too mainstream. There are a lot of new artists picking up on the sound [and] trying to duplicate this genre. We do have an advantage of actually lived and played this music during the '60s, even though we practiced in basements, attics, living rooms and some garages."

The Violanta

The Violanta is an European Street Organ. A typical street organ in Europe is mounted on a three wheeled cart and pushed through the city streets where the operator stops and plays for donations. The Violanta's music is run now mechanically with a motor and with help of electric, transported on a trailer. Traditionally, however, vendors would crank the organs for hours on end and pull them with horses. The books of music are "read" by the organ like a player piano and range in pieces from American to classical and European tunes including the latest Mama Mia from Abba. Large street organs first appeared in Amsterdam around 1785.

Over the years The Violanta has delighted music lovers throughout the USA with melodious waltzes at spirited music festival playing popular music of today.

The history of the European tradition was shared during a television show which was aired by EBTV in November 2008. This street organ is, called Violanta, which means "little powerful", It was built in 1920. Following in tradition, the large organ was originally used to play music at summer festivals and was pushed along streets in the spring, fall and wintertime. Until World War II when the music was silenced when Violanta was dismantled, separated and hidden away. "During WWII there were no street organs at all. The Nazi's were confiscating them so the Dutch people took them apart and hid them. After the war, people knew the war was over because the street organs came back onto the streets.

Violanta, however, became the "forgotten street organ" and remained in its various hiding places for 35 years before falling into the hands of master craftsman and artist Gerhardt Roos. It took him many years to find all the pieces and put them together. Roos lovingly restored and painted the organ. His painstaking restoration included the organ's internal music center, which has 68 wooden pipes, drums, cymbals, violins, flutes, large bellows, and castanets. He then painted the intricate carved exterior pieces with bright flowers and swirls of pink, gold, and blue; a scene depicting Holland's green pastures and lakes; while two vivid portraits of beautiful gypsy girls look out at listeners from either side. Dominating the center of the piece is a mechanical conductor whose arms move up and down in time to the music.

You probably have heard this before: "You Build It and They Will Come" That is what is happening each day after the grand opening off SHOWTIME 7 years ago.

Many musicians have made their debuts there. As well as many have come as guests, fans, audience and jam musicians throughout the year.

This years SHOWTIME's Annual Holiday Party was held on December 27th 2009 together with MoPromo.

The stage was set between the Bohemian decor which are permanent backgrounds for the stage at SHOWTIME.

Musicians from the Lehigh Valley, New Jersey and New York came to celebrate the holiday season.

This powerful band did an excellent set adjusted to a smaller listing room setting. The quality of their music was very professional and very original ~ this is an A+ band.

First Night 2010

Bethlehem's First Night 2010.

At 7:30 pm on a very wet freezing night we arrived at a beautiful site organized by ttp://www.christmascity.org

This organizations and its sponsors put this whole event together. Being a part of this years celebrating of Bethlehem's First Night 2010 was fantastic.

This heated tent was the party location for this years New Years Eve.
Free transportation was provided from the parking lot at the Banana Factory on the South side of Bethlehem.

We entered the party tent and were welcomed by a friendly staff and a warmed of seasons celebrations.

While walking through the tent we found an outside area which was decorated with ice carvings sculptures and a hugh beautiful decorated Christmas tree. There was a demonstration going on about glass blowing and beautiful handmade glass gifts were for sale.

The ice carving sculptures one more beautiful then the other were very realistic.

Inside the second tent that is where the Peeps Party Tent was found. It had a great stage with beautiful decorations and stage lights and many Peeps. We saw a great performance of Todd Wolfe. You may off Todd Wolfe a well known blues musician and was the former bass player of Sheryl Crow's band. Todd Wolfe's music is Bluesy/Rock and the band did excellent performance. The Todd Wolfe Band is awesome and worth seeing band and performing around the tri-state area. Take a look at his web site http://www.myspace.com/toddwolfemusic

During intermission we had the chance to look around in this huge party tent which was filled with Peeps boxes. The Peeps exhibit presented different settings and uses of Peeps. This one in particular was cute. A Rock band setting filled with Peeps complete with background singers. This entry was made by a 5th grader.

For the second part of the evening the evening brought us the legendary Blues Brotherhood.
A very popular band in Bethlehem, a tribute band to the Blues Brothers music.
This high energy band which has 10 talented musicians including our good friend Bob Thomas on keys!

At 7:00pm on the Tuesday night of Christmas week, Monique from MoPromo made her way over to meet up with the legendary 60's rock band The DOUGHBOYS members from Plainfield, NJ. She had arranged for a meeting. The boys made their separate ways over Scholey's Mountain down into the valley to Centenary College. They all meet at the studio of WNTI Radio for an interview with Cable Man Dan that night.

Just like Santa Clause Gar Francis and Mike Caruso arrived on time and with a joly spirit and lots of laughter that they carried over the airwaves during the entire show. The Show Reggae & World Rhythms airs ever Tuesday night from 8:00pm - 11:00pm with Cable Man Dan.

This week Gar Francis, Mike Caruso & Monique from MoPromo were in the radio studio to talk about the new Christmas single cd Jackie Kringle & The Elves and other projects they all are working on. Mike Caruso the bass player of the DOUGHBOYS explained the birth of the DOUGHBOYS as the Ascots and how they did "PAINT IT BLACK" live before the Rolling Stones were able to do it live. Mike explained they rehearsed the night before the song and when his band played it live the next night fans thought it was one of their originals. Mike continued to tell us that their manager thought they need image when they changed their bands name from the Ascots to The DOUGHBOYS and that the WWI uniforms would be it.

Monique who set up this interview with Cable Man Dan, Gar Francis and Mike Caruso, informed their listeners about the coolest song in the world voting campaign that is going on online for The DOUGHBOYS.

At 8:45pm Cable Man Dan called in the world coolest drummer that we all know as Richard X. Heyman of the DOUGHBOYS at his home in New York City. On the air Richard X. shared some more of the legendary history of the DOUGHBOYS and about his solo project that are best described as Beatles Style music.

Dan placed the Jackie Kringle & The Elves "Let's Have A Rockin Christmas" on the air before the hour.

A listener known as Barry called into the studio to requested a Plainfield Slim & The Groundhawg song from their 2nd album When The Devil Hits Home the song "Dirty Girl " was played. Barry is familiar with Gar Francis blues band Plainfield Slim and he can't wait for March when Plainfield Slim & The Groundhawgsa are opening up for Peter Tork which we all know as one of the members of the Monkees. Peter Tork has a blues band called Peter Tork Shoes Sued Blues Band. Centenary Stage Co. together with Joe Hirsh Productions and MoPromo will put on a Centenary Mini Blues Festival March 12 - 13 2010.

After the news break of the hour, we received a really cool call from Nashville, TN
One of the DOUGHBOYS' fans was listening to the program on his computer online that night and called in to say hello to his favorite band as well as ask them some great questions.

With a lot of laughter and Christmas cheer , Jackie Kringle was played again on the air. You know it was planned to be a Christmas program this week and we only had one Christmas song. Maybe next year Gar Francis will come out with a complete Christmas Album, like Bob Dylan did this year.

The later part of the interview was focused on Gar Francis as a songwriter. Which will have a new album released under the name GAR FRANCIS. One of the new songs that will be on that album is "Palaces" which is a very pretty song. As with many songs that are written by Gar, you can interpret the meaning of the lyrics as you wish. Here is a new music video that we interpreted as the crash of wallstreet aka our palace as well as the french revolution crashed french in 1789-1799.

After saying our goodbyes on the air the boys posed for a picture with music legend Bob Marley.

We all left the studio while Cable Man Dan continued his program till 11:00pm.

As soon as we left the studio my phone was ringing and text messages were coming in with reactions of the interview. The reactions kept coming also the next morning with emails from fans and friends that listened to the program and were delighted to hear Black Sheep played on the radio that night.

I was very surprised that during that interview that night, I heard from a good friend from my Theater days. And it was so perfect that he called because the last role we did the together in the Theater was Christmas Carol which he played the lead. Bill Nut called the station that night because he recognized my voice and heard my name over the air Monique. That was a great Christmas present to hear from him again.

Since Ron Dante reprised his role as the lead vocalist of his legendary vocal group to produce the Archies’ acclaimed The Archies’ Christmas Album in 2008, a healthy proliferation of new rock and roll oriented Christmas releases have followed in its wake.

Alongside the new Little Girls (as the Hollyberries) single, Tony Bennett’s Grammy nominated Christmas extravaganza and Bob Dylan’s pleasantly surprising Christmas album, one of the most interesting Christmas releases of 2009 to date stems from the pen of Doughboys guitarist Gar Francis.
Born Gary Venittelli in Plainfield, New Jersey, Francis was recruited by the veteran garage band, Doughboys in 2005 to assume guitar responsibilities from founding member Willy Kirchofer, who sadly had passed away that year. Francis’ earlier work with CBGBs staples, the Rockids had stood him in good stead with the Doughboys’ rhythm and blues-inspired brand of garage rock and made him a very logical choice to help carry the band’s legacy into the new millennium.

Francis’ expertise in that respect also provided the aesthetic impetus for his new solo single, Let’s Have A Rockin’ Christmas. As was the case with the Little Girls and their new Christmas single (released as the Hollyberries), Francis issued his new track under a pseudonym, Jackie Kringle And The Elves.

Although the two releases emphasize slightly different sub-genres of rock and roll, Let’s Have A Rockin’ Christmas celebrates the occasion with as much exuberance and a healthy dose of Love/Chocolate Watchband-inspired, no-nonsense garage sensibility. Francis wrote the track and produced the sessions, with Danny Caruso overseeing engineering and mixing responsibilities.
While the Doughboys’ just released Act Your Rage album for RAM Records remains the band’s (and Francis’) primary focus, Let’s Have A Rockin’ Christmas provides a more than worthy interlude. A dynamic acoustic band which delivered an unplugged MTV style performance this last Sunday afternoon in SHOWTIME.
With all original songs, the audience wanted more from this talented band.

The GAR FRANCIS band is lead by Gar Francis on vocals/guitar, Lee Fink on slide guitar, Rocco Scavone on the box and Danny Caruso on acoustic bass.
Gar Francis is know as the songwriter of the Legendary 60’s garage rock band the Doughboys whose debut album (after 40 years) “Is It Now?” produced the hit single "Black Sheep" that was voted #2 “Coolest Song In The World for 2008” on Little Steven’s Underground Garage. The band took their audience on a mystical journey through the hills where they met for the first time "Marlene" then down to "The Bank of the River", and passing beautiful "Palaces" on the way to "Ol' Toms River" and back to a bottle of "Whiskey".

The second set started with a song that left the audience in ohs when they saw the WWII color footage that was worked into a beautiful music video and played on a large flat screen tv. The song is called ROCKET; a tribute to all our Veterans. With representation of the USO and a member of the military, the band received a personal thank you and memorial pins from the USO representative for the song ROCKET.
The GAR FRANCIS band lives up to the high quality of music and performances that we are known to find from artists like Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. The band played two full sets.

Plainfield blues musicians Plainfield Slim & The Groundhawgs will headline the Blues Stage with other blues musicians from New Jersey and Pennsylvania October 3rd at the Festival in the Borough in Washington.

This year the Washington Bid office with sponsorships of local business are holding their annual Festival in the Borough in Washington, NJ. There will be plenty of fun for everyone, with a Washington Kid Care Family Fun Are, Arts & Crafts Vendors, Delicious Food, Beer Garden and three stages with Live Music. The date is October 3rd from 11:00am to 9:00pm and the location is downtown Washington (Rt57). The festival will be held Rain or Shine.

The Festival in the Borough is proud to present live music from Bill Harley’s Comets. Magnum, Jame Bone, Whiskey Girls Band, Jimmy & The Parrots, Quimby Mountain Band, Day Low on the main stage. This year the festival committee has added the BLUES STAGE which is located across the street from the PNC Bank in the vacant lot of the St. Cloud Hotel. The Blues stage is sponsored by Taylor Rental and MoPromo Management. The Blues stage will present great blues music from June Bloom from Washington, Lori V Can’t Stop Now from the Washington area, The Blues Factor from Berks County PA and Plainfield Slim & The Groundhawgs from Plainfield NJ. This Blues lineup will not only entertain you but also gives you the opportunity to meet the band and buy their merchandise at the musician booth next to the beer garden right by the Blues stage. There is plenty of free parking available. The blues stage will start at noon and runs through 5pm with foot stomping, Southern and Mississippi type juke joint blues originals and Blues standards.

New Jersey’s own band from Plainfield The Doughboys will share the stage with Robin Trower this Sunday at the Starland Ballroom.
If you haven’t seen the Doughboys yet, you have been missing something really fantastic. The Doughboys are a band that will give you all you are looking for in a garage rock band. They have a great energy, a powerful drum solo, and great showmanship that has been there for years. The Doughboys always please the crowdon any given night.
This legendary NJ band , who came together in 1965, reunited in 2000, have released this treasure trove of instant classic covers and originals with cool obscure rock'n'roll cuts.

The Doughboys performance is always a show with a solid play list of 60’s classic including covers from The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds,
Animals and The Who ect. Their show also includes a focus on the band’s original tracks from their album “Is It Now?” like the song Black Sheep. Lately their show includes new songs from their soon released new album “Act Your Rage”.

The Doughboys lead singer Myke Scavone who was the lead singer of Ram Jam and scored their big hit "Black Betty" in 1977, brings to the stage energy and showmanship. Myke Scavone toured and opened for Robin Trower (Procol Harum) back in 1977 when Myke was with Ram Jam. Now they share the stage together again at the Starland Ballroom this weekend. The Doughboys drummer is legendary Richard X Heyman who has played drums with legends like Brian Wilson and Link Wray and embarked on a solo singer/songwriter career. Bass player Mike Caruso went into session work and even jammed with Hendrix! Guitarist Gar Francis gives the band static with smooth riffs and great charisma similar like Keith Richards does for the Rolling Stones.

The drummer Richard X Heyman, Lead singer Myke Scavone, and Bass player Mike Caruso are all still with the band.
They added talented songwriter/ guitar player Gar Francis from the Rolling Stones Tribute band Sticky Fingers to the band in 2005.
Gar brought them new original songs to their already powerful repertoire.

They have played at clubs in New York, like the Cutting Room, Arlene’s Grocery, The Living Room, BB King and Kenny’s Castaway. On Wednesday I took a trip to see a great friend down in Ocean Grove, NJ. Upon arrival a great lunch with champagne was waiting for me. What a treat! After looking around the town of Ocean Grove I went off to my meeting in Redbank, NJ.

I never really took a close look at Redbank, but I have to report this is cute town and worth going back to. Maybe visit Redbank around the Holidays!?

I received a call from The Doughboys bass player Mike Caruso who suggested I should make a stop in Jack's Music Shoppe and check out their inventory of cds of local New Jersey bands.

They carry The Doughboys cd "Is it Now?" !!! If you are looking for a store to buy their cd you can at this cool place in Redbank, NJ

A few doors down from Jack's I found a real cool store called Funk & Standard - Variety Store. I met a real nice person working there called MacKenzie. Her brother's band The Gay Blades are opening up at the Starland Ballroom for 30H!3 on September 11th Doors open at 5:00pm. You can find some real affordable fashion in this store. They had cool hats and tops which are really unique in their styles. There was also a section with funny books and great gifts.

This is a great place for Christmas shopping this year.

Then I took a walk to Count Basie Theatre around the corner of Broad Street. I met with Izzy of the theater management and talked to him about The Doughboys, Plainfield Slim and Bob Lanza. I gave him the information about the bands, which he took upstairs to his team. The Count Basie Theatre has some great acts scheduled in the next months coming.

My experience of Redbank was wonderful today and I will go back there soon to follow up on the Press Kits I left behind. I will get there a little earlier in the day perhaps so that all shops are open for me to explore. That would be fun.

New York, New Amsterdam, September 8th 2009.
MoPromo, Monique and co pilot Johanna, left Western New Jersey and took a pilgrimage trip to New York City to be a part of the 400 years celebration of enduring friendship between the Netherlands and the United States. In 1609, a Dutch ship called the Halve Maen reached the shores of what would become New York City. The Dutch pioneers settled on the island of Manhattan brought entrepreneurship. With events and activates throughout 2009 we celebrate the shared values which remain important today and in the future: freedom, tolerance and the pursuit of happiness.

Henry Hudson the English sea captain hired by the Dutch government in 1609 traded beaver pelts instead of spices in New York and made friends with the Lenape Indians on the island Manhattan.

Today New Yorkers and other visitors from all around the world have the opportunity this week to eat Dutch food, meet Dutch musicians, and see Dutch costumes and make Dutch friends.

Mopromo had the great opportunity to meet a group of musicians called Kleintje Pils, which was a very entertaining brass band from De Sassenheim, The Netherlands.

This band will be playing at Battery Park the whole entire week on several time slots. The location of this Dutch festival is in front of the US Custom Building.

The Kleine Pils is very good and so entertaining. I had the opportunity to meet Gerard Baker which was one of the creative player in the band. Johanna Vander Heyden gave The Violanta's CD of The Dutch Street organ to the festival to play this week during intermission. The Violanta will be playing this weekend in Belvidere, NJ. We also meet Jan David whom new song "Miss Sunshine" was debuted at the park today.
Jan David a songwriter from The Netherlands will be at the park the entire week and will be performing is new song " Miss Sunshine".

We ended the trip the afternoon by renting some bicycles for FREE!!! Yes, you can rent these cool looking orange bikes for free with a photo id for 4 hours the whole week.

We rode around the park and pier A . Between crazy New York traffic and coach buses from out of town we made it all around the park and back in 4 hours.

Last night around 10:05 pm during the "Low Budget Blues" program with Rich Skelly at 88.7FM Gar Francis was on the radio to talk about what is new? http://wrsu.rutgers.edu/The radio interview with Gar Francis, who is also known to us in the Blues World as Plainfield Slim told us about the making of his new CD " When The Devil Hits Home" and upcoming music projects he is working on.
Gar Francis' manager, Monique, was also in the studio to assist with information about show dates and exciting blues information for the listeners of WRSU Rutgers Radio.

The title cd track When The Devil Hits Home was played off Plainfield Slim & The Groundhawgs new cd. Followed up by an other great track of the cd "Lovesick Train". Radio host Rich Skelly was impressed with the songs. Gar is currently playing out with his blues band in the Tri-State area and is playing this weekend at 11:00pm on Labor Day at a New York club called Otto's Shrunken Head on 538 14th Street. That show is hosted by Unsteady Freddie and together with some real cool surfer bands it will be great night. Check MoPromo's web site for details.

Monique brought to the radio studio an great blues cd which Gar Francis produced together with blues diva Jeanne Lozier. The CD is called " Queen Of Your Dreams" . This great Blues album is filled with wonderful original song written by Gar Francis. With surprises like this one. Track No. 5 "Beg and Plead" was recorded with Bernie Brauswetter on guitar and 'Big Nancy' Swarbrick on harp. This track was played which generated interest from a listener who called into the radio last night. That was pretty cool.

One of the topic of the interview was getting the inside scope about the Doughboys and their new single and their up coming new CD release "Act Your Rage".
Listeners had the opportunity to hear the Doughboys new single CD Track " I'm Not Your Man".
This produced new single “I’m Not Your Man”, is picked on Little Steven’s Underground Garage for “Coolest Song In The World” for the week of September 5, 2009.

The Program was concluded with dates of shows for both bands and the one other cool track of Plainfield Slim's new cd "Miss Daisy".

SKYFEST - August 14-16 2009 The weekend started on Friday afternoon with me being a judge for the Battle Of The Bands sponsored by the Express Times Exposed.

The competition had some great quality bands and judging was hard. The Gentlemen's Club & June Bloom were some of my favorites. You can find them on www.myspace.com/thegentlemensmusic and you can find June Bloom on Facebook.com

Other bands at SKYFEST in Delaware,NJ were Dandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams.

This band was awesome; their whole branding of their image is great and cleverly created. Love it!

Robben Ford was at the festival on Saturday night. He gave what his fans were looking for- a great blues night. It was very nice meeting him in person after his show in the VIP tent which was so nicely decorated by Dave & Kacey.

Mell & Kenny did an excellent job on the food and refreshments for the Artist/VIP guests. A specail Thank you to Dan Hirschberg for introducing me to great people at the festival and asking me to be a judge this year. Thank you Dan!

SKYFEST was well attended on Saturday night. Night time is my favorite time of the day, where the tents and their lights came to live. The Delaware river valley transformed in a mystical place with an event for young and old to enjoy.

I found at the festival Spider Glen, music director off WNTI radio and Todd and his staff from HomegrownRadio.org the online radio. After meeting with Todd this weekend, HomeGrownRadio has some hot cds to add to their music collection. Todd received from me The Bob Lanza Blues Band new CD " Things Ain't So Bad". The Doughboys cd "It is Now?" and Plainfield Slim & The Groundhawgs’ cd "When The Devil Hits Home".
All those cds are also available in the county library in Belvidere,NJ to be checked out for free with your library card.

The festival ended on Sunday with the Hector Del Curto. The main tent was dancing even it was over 90 degrees. Everyone had fun this entire weekend.

Besides having the opportunity to see and hear great bands, there were also quality vendors like Great Stuff From Jane's House out of Blairstown,NJ.

Beautiful silver Jewelry was displayed and for sale. Jane’s House is a great place to visit across the street from the Theater downtown Blairstown.

August 8th Fort Dix- Plainfield Slim & The Groundhawgs made their way to Fort Dix together with The Doughboys for some lively entertainment yesterday afternoon.

The afternoon was scheduled with all sorts of "entertainment acts".

USA Troops & families enjoyed their afternoon with the theme for the day: 60s Flashback Family Fun Day.

With many thanks to Don Cafferty who recorded the shows that afternoon for both bands and John Pfeiffer-The Aquarian who will report on both bands.

The deepest thanks for the many friends and fans that came out to see the bands perform at Fort Dix.
It was so great to see you all there.

Mother nature, this time, was a big fan and she was so enjoyable, she is turning in to a big fan of the bands. It is great to have her on our side this summer.

Gar Francis' new song "Rocket" was well received at Fort Dix. Robert Vogt the Director of the WMR was very pleased with both bands and he wants them back on the base soon.

"Rocket" delivery was very special for the band as well for the audience at Fort Dix.

The sale of the single will create proceeds that will be donated to the Wounded Solders Organization.

The start was made at Fort Dix and we will keep going.

Here are the Doughboys met Philip Rosso, Lieutenant Colonel US Army, Commander, 10th PSYOP Battalion.

A blues lover himself, which was occupied earlier that afternoon with his Battalion at a ceremony on the base. From where his battalion could hear Plainfield Slim's blues tunes during the ceremony which made it very special for his troops. His Battalion is leaving for Afghanistan in 24 hours. Yellow ribbons are hanging in the trees at Fort Dix until they return in 9 months. The commander hopes that we will there when his troops return to Fort Dix and celebrate their return with a live concert.

A special recognition was given to both bands for playing for the USA Troops and their family. A beautiful plaque was given to Gar Francis for Plainfield Slim & The Groundhagws and to Myke Scavone for The Doughboys.

They were " The Ultimate Weapon" that day in bringing lively entertainment to Fort Dix.

The afternoon ended with meeting some fine young men who are fighting for Freedom.

A BIG thank you to our Troops for keeping us safe!
